Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary Tract infections (UTIs) are more common in women, and can affect the bladder, kidneys or urethra. These infections can cause pain and discomfort. UTI symptoms include:
- Pain or a burning sensation when peeing (dysuria)
- Needing to pee more often than usual
- Needing to pee more often than usual during the night (nocturia)
- Needing to pee suddenly or more urgently than usual
- Pee that looks cloudy
- Blood in your pee (See GP or Pharmacist to seek medical advice)
UTI’s may be treated with antibiotics, but they’re not always needed as they sometimes resolve on their own in a couple of days.

With Pharmacy First, we at Swift Pharmacy can provide a prompt consultation along with expert guidance and advice to help give you relief from UTIs. Along with over the counter solutions we may able to prescribe a short course of antibiotics. This service is eligible to women 16-64 years of age.

If you are not eligible for the Free Urinary Tract Infection treatment under the Pharmacy First Service then you can book a Private Service with one of our pharmacists.
What you can do
To help ease symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) you can:
- Take paracetamol to help with pain and temperature
- Use a hot water bottle to ease pain and discomfort
- Rest and drink plenty of water
- Avoid having sex
Medical Attention
Please seek medical attention such as your GP if you have any of the following:
- Have a very high temperature, or feel hot and shivery
- Are confused or drowsy
- Have pain in the lower tummy or in the back, just under the ribs
- Are agitated or restless
- These symptoms could mean you have a kidney infection, which can be serious if it’s not treated as it could cause sepsis
