Ear infections are most common in children but can affect adults as well
They often involve the middle ear (otitis media), that causes inflammation (redness and swelling) and a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum.
You do not always need to see a GP for an ear infection as they often get better on their own within 3 days.
Common Symptoms
In Children:
- Ear pain (especially when lying down)
- Tugging or pulling at the ear
- Trouble sleeping
- Crying more than usual
- Trouble hearing or responding to sounds
- Fever (especially in younger children)
- Fluid draining from the ear
- Loss of balance
In Adults:
- Ear pain or pressure
- Drainage of fluid from the ear
- Hearing loss
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Dizziness (sometimes)
If you, or your child, have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to do your normal activities, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until you feel better.
Treatment Options
Home Remedies (for mild infections):
- Warm compress: Helps relieve pain.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: Ibuprofen or paracetamol.
- remove any discharge by wiping the ear with cotton wool
Don't:
- do not put anything inside your ear to remove earwax, such as cotton buds or your finger
- do not let water or shampoo get in your ear
- do not go swimming while you have an ear infection
- do not use decongestants or antihistamines – there’s no evidence they help with ear infections
Medical Treatments:
- Antibiotics: Prescribed for bacterial infections
- Prescription ear drops: Especially for outer ear infections.
When to See a pharmacist or doctor
- Symptoms last more than 2–3 days
- Severe pain or high fever
- Discharge (especially pus or blood)
- Hearing loss
- Frequent infections (3+ in 6 months or 4+ in a year)
